When we are young, most of us believe in the inherent goodness of man. We believe that people are mainly good, even though they occasionally do bad things. But when we get older, our opinions often change. The common misconception is that old people lose their faith in humanity because of their age, but that isn't so.

The truth is that the older you get, the more you have to protect. And whether we are speaking about a business or a family, faith in the basic decency of man is a luxury most adults cannot afford. That goes double when the economy gets tight.

In the wake of the economic recession, domestic burglaries have jumped by four percent. While that might not seem like a lot, the number is noteworthy because this is the first increase in several years.
